Awards and Scholarships
Illini Dairy Club
There are a number of awards and scholarships available through the Department of Animal Sciences and the Illini Dairy Club.
Club Awards/Scholarships
A. Club Academic Scholarships
One each for Freshman (>15 hr), Sophomore (>45 hr) and Junior (>75 hr). Credit hours must have been completed at UIUC. Awards generally from PDCA calf sale income to the Club.
Must be Illini Dairy Club member, minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
Selection committee includes 3 Club advisors and 2 Club seniors.
B. Dairy Club Outstanding Sophomore and Senior Awards
Outstanding sophomore is selected by Club seniors.
Outstanding Senior is selected by Club's executive committee.
Other Awards/Scholarships
A. Outstanding Senior Scholar in Dairy Sciences
Award based on scholarship, leadership, and extracurricular activities.
Recipient must be senior (60 hr at UIUC, including 24 hr minimum in Dairy courses), must have 3.50 GPA in courses from UIUC on a 4.0 basis, and must show evidence of leadership, high personal standards and an interest in and plans for a career in the general area of dairy production. Participation in extracurricular activities is desirable.
Selection committee appointed by Executive Officer of Department.
B. PDCA Book Scholarship
Scholarship awarded by PDCA to a Dairy major.
Recipient must have completed 40 hr with at least 3 Dairy Science courses (2 from UIUC). Basis for selection is GPA at UIUC, extracurricular activities, interest in dairying and need for financial assistance.
Selection committee includes Club advisors and PDCA representatives.
C. Leo Fryman Leadership Award
Part of the Leo Fryman Memorial Fund established under management of Illinois 4-H Foundation, Inc. in cooperation with Cooperative Extension Service, Department of Animal Sciences and College of Agriculture, UIUC.
Recipient must have completed 75 hr (including 40 hr at UIUC) and four or more courses ( $ 12 hr) in Dairy Science at UIUC. Selection based on GPA, extracurricular activities, interest in dairying, leadership qualities, and experience with 4-H dairy project.
Selection committee appointed by Head of Department of Animal Sciences.
Recipient receives a plaque and a cash award from Illinois 4-H Foundation.
D. Jerry Cash Memorial Awards
4-H Award, for highest scoring member of 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Team at the National Contest.
Collegiate Award, for highest scoring member of University of Illinois Dairy Cattle Judging Team of the National Contest.
E. ADSA Undergraduate Recognition Awards
Awards to sophomores (Bronze Medal), Juniors (Silver Medal), and Seniors (Gold Medal), given by American Dairy Science Association.
Recipients must be enrolled in 4 year program in Department of Animal Sciences or related field and enrolled for at least 2 semesters. Recipients must be a member of ADSA, in the top 10% of their college class, and be active in the Illini Dairy Club
Nominations made to ADSA by Club advisors.
Recipients receive certificate from ADSA.
F. Dairy Shrine - Dairy Student Recognition Award
Purpose is to encourage graduating seniors to work with dairy cattle after graduation.
Top Dairy Senior is nominated to the Dairy Shrine for the national competition.
Cash awards to the top 5 nominees from the nation, and a plaque and lifetime Dairy Shrine membership for all nominees.
G. Dairy Shrine - UDIA Milk Marketing Scholarship
Given by the United Dairy Industry Association (UDIA) and the Dairy Shrine.
Purpose is to encourage qualified students to pursue careers in marketing of dairy products.
Selection based on academic standing, leadership ability and extracurricular activities and reasons for interest in dairy products marketing.
Students apply direction to Dairy Shrine - UDIA.
H. Gerhard Harpestad Dairy Production Awards
MUST ATTEND UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS IN ORDER TO RECEIVE AWARD.
Outstanding incoming Freshman (two).
Cash awards and a plaque or certificate.
I. Douglas-Kalmar Scholarship
MUST ATTEND UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS IN ORDER TO RECEIVE AWARD.
Outstanding transfer or incoming Freshman student.
Cash award and a plaque or certificate.
J. Ralph Johnson Memorial Scholarship
MUST ATTEND UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS IN ORDER TO RECEIVE AWARD.
Outstanding incoming transfer or freshman student (one or more)
Guidelines for selection:
Enrollment or acceptance in Department of Animal Sciences, UIUC.
Career interest in dairy production
Member state 4-H dairy cattle judging team
Previous scholarship (25%)
Potential leadership in dairy industry (50%)
