DAIRY AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS for Prospective Sudents

The Department of Animal Sciences, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, provides for the management of scholarships and dairy production awards to outstanding incoming freshmen or transfer students. Each award requires acceptance and enrollment in the Department of Animal Sciences, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC).

DOUGLAS-KALMAR SCHOLARSHIP

A $300 cash award and a certificate shall be made to an outstanding incoming student who transfers from a junior or community college to the Animal Sciences curriculum at UIUC or to an incoming freshman enrolled in the Department of Animal Sciences with a career interest in dairy production. Guidelines for selection of the outstanding student include previous scholarship (25%), need (25%) and potential leadership in the dairy industry (50%). Potential leadership will be based on participation in leadership activities in 4-H, high school, and junior or community college.

GERHARD HARPESTAD DAIRY PRODUCTION AWARD

Two $200 cash awards and certificates shall be made to outstanding incoming freshmen reenrolled in the Department of Animal Sciences, UIUC, with a career interest in dairy production. The following serves as guidelines in the selection of outstanding students. 1) The recipient's parents should have been actively involved in the Dairy Herd Improvement (DHI) program within the last three years. The DHI program involves dairy production testing and record keeping systems. 2) Participation in leadership activities in 4-H, FFA, high school and community is desired. 3) Interest in dairy cattle and plans for a career in the dairy field are important.

RALPH JOHNSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

One or more $250 cash award(s) and certificate(s) shall be made to outstanding incoming student(s), transfer or freshmen, enrolled in the Department of Animal Sciences, UIUC, with a career interest in dairy production. Guidelines for selection of outstanding student(s) include: 1) Member or finalist in the state 4-H dairy cattle judging team, 2) Previous scholarship (25%), 3) Need (25%), and 4) Potential leadership in the dairy industry (50%).

Applicants should submit a letter of application, which indicates how they meet and exceed the guidelines of each award for which they are eligible. Deadline for applications is March 1 of any given year.
